What is Image Color Picker?#

Image Color Picker reads the exact color of any pixel in an image. Load an image and a loupe follows your cursor, magnifying the pixels around it, so you can aim at a single pixel or average a small area.

The color is shown as HEX, RGB, HSL, and OKLCH, and each value can be copied on its own. Picked colors collect in the history. Images are read in your browser and are never uploaded.

How to Use#

  1. Add an image by dropping it, pasting it, or choosing a file.
  2. Move the cursor over the image. The loupe shows the pixels around it and the color under the cursor.
  3. Choose 1 px, 3 × 3, or 5 × 5 to set how much of the image the color comes from.
  4. Click, tap, or press Enter to pick the color.
  5. Copy the value you need.

Sampling Modes#

  • 1 px: the exact pixel under the cursor.
  • 3 × 3 and 5 × 5: the average of the pixels in a square around the cursor. Red, green, blue, and alpha are each averaged on their own. This smooths out noise, compression artifacts, and soft edges.

Near an edge, the square shifts to stay inside the image, so the cursor pixel is always included. If the image is smaller than the square, the whole image is averaged.

Reading the Values#

  • HEX: six digits, or eight when the color has transparency.
  • RGB, HSL, and OKLCH: the same color in other notations.
  • Luminance: relative luminance from 0 to 1. Higher means brighter.

The alpha channel is included in the values.

History#

Every color you pick is added to the history, newest first. The same color is not added twice. Select a row to show it in the color panel, or empty the whole list. Copy all copies the history as comma-separated HEX values, newest first. The history lasts until you reload the page.

Keyboard#

Focus the image and use the arrow keys to move the cursor one pixel at a time. Press Enter or Space to pick the color under the cursor.

Supported Formats#

PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF, BMP, and AVIF are supported. An animated GIF uses only its first frame. SVG is not supported, because its pixels cannot be read directly.
